Motheo District Municipality

Motheo is the Sesotho for “foundation or string base of a building”. District Municipality covers the central part of the Free State province, with Bloemfontein as focal point. It is geographically positioned in the heart of the economic and industrial development of the Free State province.

The Motheo Region is not only in terms of economic output and cultural intensity the strongest of the five districts of the Free State province as the most centrally situated province in SA, but it also includes Bloemfontein as the capital city of the province. Motheo Region therefore constitutes the heartbeat of the Free State, offering excellent entrepreneurial and investment opportunities.

The following three local municipalities fall within the jurisdiction of the Motheo region:

Mangaung Local Municipality

Bloemfontein: Known as the “City of Roses”, it is the sixth largest city in SA and the capital of the Free State in all respects, while forming inter alia the cultural, tertiary educational and shopping hub of the province.

Also from a historical point of view, Bloemfontein/Mangaung ranks highly, while it houses the seat of the Appeal Court. Bloemfontein's central location makes it ideal for the holding of conferences.

Botshabelo: Located 55 km from Bloemfontein and with a population of approximately 500 000, it is the largest township development in the Free State. Botshabelo also disposes of an industrial park with 138 factories and infrastructure worth R500 million, establishing the base for the maintenance of thousands of job opportunities.

Thaba 'Nchu: Situated 12km from Botshabelo, this town has vibrant retail shopping facilities, a luxury hotel and casino, cultural amenities and the Selosesha Industrial Park. Nearby is the Maria Moroka Nature Reserve and the Protea Black Mountain Hotel.

Mantsopa Local Municipality

The municipal area comprises the towns of Ladybrand, Hobhouse, Excelsior, Tweespruit and Thaba Phatswa.

The area is also traversed by the Maloti Route on the R26 from KwaZulu-Natal to the Eastern Cape and Lesotho. Commercial farming, scenic beauty and tourist sights are particular economic strengths.

Ladybrand is an economically bustling town, sometimes being popularly referred to as the “capital” of Lesotho.

Naledi Local Municipality

The area of Mantsopa Local Municipality comprises the towns of Dewetsdorp, Wepener and Vanstadensrus.

The area is traversed by the N8 Maloti Tourism Route and the R26 route.

The strongest economic sectors of the area are stock farming and tourism.
